Labor Day Pet Safety Tips

Labor Day Pet Safety Tips: Keeping Your Pets Happy & Healthy This Holiday

Labor Day is the perfect time to enjoy the last long weekend of summer with family, friends, and of course—our beloved pets. Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue, heading to the lake, or simply relaxing at home, it’s important to keep your furry companions safe during all the holiday festivities.

Here are some helpful tips to make sure your pets enjoy Labor Day as much as you do:

Watch Out for Party Foods

Holiday gatherings often mean tables full of delicious food—but not everything is safe for pets.

  • Avoid giving pets fatty meats, bones, onions, chocolate, grapes, and alcohol.

  • Keep trash bins secured so curious noses can’t get into leftovers.

  • If you’d like your pet to join in, prepare pet-safe treats so they don’t feel left out.

Keep Cool in the Heat

Even though summer is winding down, Labor Day can still be hot.

  • Provide plenty of fresh water and shade if your pet will be outside.

  • Limit exercise during peak heat hours.

  • Never leave your pet in a parked car, even for a short time—it can be life-threatening within minutes.

Loud Noises & Crowds

Celebrations sometimes include fireworks, music, or large groups of people. Some pets can become stressed or anxious.

  • Create a quiet, comfortable space inside for your pet to relax.

  • Use calming music, favorite toys, or anxiety vests if needed.

  • Make sure their ID tags and microchip information are up to date in case they get startled and run off.

Water Safety

If you’re heading to the lake or pool:

  • Always supervise pets near water.

  • Use a life jacket designed for dogs, especially if you’re on a boat.

  • Rinse off after swimming to remove chlorine or lake bacteria from their fur.

Travel with Care

For road trips, keep pets safely secured in a carrier or pet seatbelt harness. Bring along their food, water, medications, and a favorite blanket or toy to help them feel at ease.

At Wildwood Petcare, we know how important it is to keep your pets safe and happy through every season. Whether you need pet sitting, dog walking, or in-home care during the holiday weekend, we’re here to help so you can relax and enjoy your time.
