Summer Time Tips for Pet Owners

Summertime Tips for Pet Owners: Keeping Your Pets Safe, Cool & Happy

Summer is a time for sunshine, fun adventures, and outdoor play-but the rising temperatures can pose serious risks to our furry friends. At Wildwood Petcare, we believe every pet deserves a safe, cool, and enjoyable summer. Whether you're heading to the ocean, staying home, or booking a pet sitter, here are our top tips to keep your pets happy and healthy all summer long.

1. Hydration is Key
Just like us, pets need plenty of water to stay cool and avoid dehydration. Always keep fresh, clean water available-especially after walks, playtime, or travel. Consider portable water bottles and collapsible bowls for easy access on the go.

2. Watch Out for Hot Surfaces
Sidewalks, driveways, and sand can get dangerously hot and burn your pet's paws. A good rule of thumb: if it's too hot for your bare feet, it's too hot for theirs. Try walking early in the morning or later in the evening when surfaces are cooler.

3. Never Leave Your Pet in a Hot Car
Even with windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to deadly levels within minutes. If you're running errands and can't bring your pet inside, it's safest to leave them at home.

4. Use Pet-Safe Sunscreen
Pets-especially those with short hair, light-colored fur, or exposed skin-can get sunburned. Talk to your vet about safe sunscreen options designed just for pets.

5. Protect Against Fleas, Ticks & Mosquitoes
Summer means more bugs! Make sure your pets are up-to-date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. These pests can carry dangerous diseases, so proactive protection is a must.

6. Cool Treats & Shade Breaks
Frozen treats (like dog-safe pupsicles or ice cubes with treats inside) are a great way to cool down your pet. Whether you're outside or on the go, always make sure your pet has access to shade and time to rest.

7. Water Safety is a Must
Many dogs love to swim, but not all are natural swimmers. Always supervise pets around pools, lakes, or the ocean. Consider a pet life vest for added safety during boating or swimming adventures.

8. Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke can be life-threatening, and quick action is essential. Watch for symptoms such as: - Excessive panting or drooling
- Lethargy or weakness
- Bright red gums or tongue
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Difficulty walking or collapsing

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke:
1. Move them immediately to a shaded or air-conditioned area.
2. Offer small amounts of cool (not cold) water.
3. Gently wet their body with lukewarm water, especially the belly, armpits, and paws.

4. Use a fan if possible to help cool them down.5. Do not use ice or cold water, as it can cause shock.
6. Call your veterinarian or the nearest emergency pet hospital right away.

Prompt treatment can save your pet's life-don't wait to seek help.
