Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?

If you’ve ever watched your dog happily munching on grass, you’re not alone! Many pet parents wonder why their furry friends do this — and whether it’s something to worry about. The good news? In most cases, grass-eating is completely normal dog behavior.

Here are a few common reasons dogs snack on grass:

1. They enjoy the taste or texture.
Some dogs simply like the flavor or feel of fresh grass, especially the soft, new growth that pops up in spring.

2. It aids digestion.
Grass can add a bit of roughage to your dog’s diet, which may help with digestion or ease mild constipation.

3. They’re feeling queasy.
Sometimes, dogs eat grass to settle their stomach or to help induce vomiting when they’re not feeling their best. Occasional stomach upset is normal, but frequent vomiting is something to discuss with your vet.

4. Boredom or anxiety.
Chewing grass can be a soothing habit, especially for dogs who need more mental stimulation or exercise. Adding walks, playtime, or puzzle toys can help redirect this behavior.

5. Seeking extra nutrients.
In rare cases, dogs may eat grass if they’re missing certain nutrients, like fiber. A balanced diet usually takes care of this, but if the behavior seems excessive, your vet can help rule out any deficiencies.

A note from Wildwood Petcare:
Eating small amounts of grass is generally safe, as long as it hasn’t been treated with fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. At Wildwood Petcare, we keep a close eye on your dog’s outdoor habits — making sure playtime is both fun and safe!
